Callecat - Symbiosis

About the Album:

The name “Symbiosis” says it all; the entire album revolves around doing things together, creating together, and experiencing music together. Together, you go further, and everything is more enjoyable together! Twelve tracks on the album were made with other artists, from the wildest corners of the world. From Berlin to Ibiza and from Russia to Argentina. Not only the music and creativity itself, but also the entire process surrounding the creation of this album… everything about this project resonates with us enormously!

In a time when the world seems more divided than ever, it makes us immensely proud to have shown that through collaboration with other people/artists (Symbiosis), you achieve so much more than we could have alone! Despite all the turmoil in the world… music transcends the boundaries created by humans. Music continues to unite people ❤️.

Symbiosis: “The interaction between two or more different organisms, to the advantage of both”.

Story behind each track:

01. Callecat – The Intro
Because we wanted everyone on the album to be equal, we chose not to have anyone “open.” Therefore, we created our own intro to open the album and start it off gently. The album begins from a place of tranquility.

02. Callecat & Gustin – Embracing Nature
Gustin and we happened to play at the same edition of The Soundgarden once. We were watching his set, and later, we approached him with the idea of collaborating. We were truly amazed at how skillfully he could build a set. It’s as if he has a special organ specifically for choosing tracks. When we started, there was a draft version, but when we sat down in the studio together, we quickly agreed on the additions and structure that needed to be incorporated. It was a fun day! He came from Ibiza to collaborate with us, and surprisingly, we managed to get it all done in just one day. We even had time to go to the park and record a goose, which we later turned into a cool FX, haha.

03. Callecat & Bodai – The Balance Of Being
Bodai once played our music in a show, and that’s when we started following her because she turned out to make and play really tasty music. She has a beautifully balanced, organic, almost serene sound. She added a wonderful atmosphere and lovely vocal tones to our setup. Interestingly, those vocal tones are her own voice.

04. Callecat & Juliane Wolf – Journey Of Species
Juliane truly stands out with the music she creates – beautiful melodies seamlessly combined with a compelling danceability. We came up with an idea for the drive and bassline, and she crafted the current melody over it. The moment we received it, we knew: collaborating with her was the right choice; it was executed really well! An interesting fact is that we only met each other in person during Nick Warren b2b Hernan Cattaneo’s set at ADE 2023. We had just shaken hands when, coincidentally, Nick Warren played our track in front of 2500 people. This live encounter couldn’t have been more perfect :).

05. Callecat & Nick Varon – Beyond Perceptions
We’ve known Nick for years now, through Watt Events. I (Koen) got to know Nick during the preparation for a Sudbeat night. His sets are deep, groovy, and melodic, really cohesive sets, not just one track after another. We had created the bassline and asked Nick to add his own twist. That’s when he came up with the metallic electronic melody; we were immediately hooked. It wasn’t easy to get the track to where it is now; we made about 40 mix versions before we were satisfied.

06. Callecat & Hobin Rude – Infinite Enclosure
We actually met Hobin through Instagram. We used to receive delightful responses to our silly coffee videos. We struck up a conversation and were quickly captivated by his music. What we truly appreciate is his deep, dark driving vibe that resonates from the depths. The sinister influence in this track is indeed his contribution. Throughout the various versions the track went through, we managed to retain a core element for each iteration. It went back and forth countless times before it was finally complete.

07. Callecat & Meeting Molly – Unified Formulas
We actually got to know Meeting Molly through his music, which truly stood out from the rest. Ever since we decided to collaborate, he was on our radar. We were particularly impressed by the groove and creativity in his tracks. Working together, without any effort we captured the atmosphere and synths, and then added the groovy bassline underneath. All of this happened through exchanging various versions back and forth, and it really only took a few days. Easy is that.

08. Callecat & Not Demure – Recurring Phases
Similarly, we got to know Not Demure through social media interactions. We exchanged comments and eventually started supporting each other’s music. He creates deep, highly refined tracks filled with the most intriguing rhythms. We started this track during ADE 2022 together in a studio in Amsterdam. Once back home, Not Demure added a fantastic lead sound to it. We fine-tuned the bassline and other elements afterward. Ironically, this was the first track we began with, and it’s the last one to be finished, haha.

09. Callecat & The Wash – Symbiotic Symphony
The Wash simply appeared out of nowhere. He quickly rose to prominence, consistently delivering cool music. We reached out to him, impressed by his hypnotic arpeggios and groovy tracks, aspects we truly admire as artists. The draft we sent was already quite advanced, but he managed to incorporate that one mesmerizing arpeggio, adding a special touch to the track. We met in person for the first time during ADE 2023, and our connection in real life was just as strong as our musical bond. We’re confident this won’t be our last collaboration.

10. Callecat & Paul Hazendonk – State Of Mind
We first met Paul as the head honcho of Manual Music. He signed one of our early EPs, “Cabin In The Woods,” and later invited us to make an album on Manual Music. We truly admire Paul’s instinct for what makes a dancefloor groove, and, of course, his consistently pumping basslines. The track underwent three completely different versions before becoming what it is now. So essentially, we ended up creating four songs together! During our collaboration, Paul primarily focused on accentuating the bassline and the raw elements in the track. We added the raw vocals and injected the right drive into the music. It was a beautiful symbiosis that resulted in the final version you hear today.

11. Callecat & Fabri Lopez – Mutual Horizons
We’ve been playing Fabri’s music ever since we started with Callecat. Mostly because of the drive in his tracks; it’s unique, it just keeps going. That’s why we approached him, and we were thrilled that he wanted to be a part of it. We actually sent him what we thought was already a quite complete setup, but he added even more drive to it. He enriched it with cool quirky sounds and an interesting arrangement, making this track one where the hands really go up in the air every time. By the way, communication with Fabri was done through Google Translate and later Chat GPT, because we don’t speak Spanish, haha.

12. Callecat & Forty Cats – Interconnecting Echoes
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Forty Cats hosted bedroom sessions where she occasionally played our music. We admire her bold sets infused with beautiful melodic moments. Initially, we might have sent a track setup that was a bit too intense, but she skillfully retained its nuance by adding subtle atmospheres without losing its edginess. It became the penultimate track on the album, yet it was the first one that reached 100% completion.

13. Callecat & Around Us – In Unity We Thrive
Ever since Callecat started, we’ve known Around Us. Jan & Gaby are steady present in the Amsterdam scene; we’ve played many gigs together and shared countless laughs. They are incredibly friendly, and the creativity in their tracks is really something else. We had a basic draft, but when they visited our studio for Pizza (and to make music), they brought along 15+ ideas, out of which 5 or 6 really stuck. It’s great that we collaborated on one of the tracks of their album, and now they’re also featured on ours.

14. Callecat – The Outro
Again, because we wanted all collaborating artists to be equal, we chose not to have anyone make the last track, but to bid farewell ourselves with an outro. The outro is essentially the intro but in a different arrangement. This also means that the album has the same notes at the end as at the beginning (Intro) and that you can put the album on repeat without noticing it.

We did our part. Now it’s yours :). Enjoy!
